The first thing to consider when choosing your English language school is the British Council accreditation scheme. This scheme is called the English in Britain Accreditation Scheme (EiBA) and was setup to guarantee teaching standards at English language schools. The scheme is managed buy the British Council in partnership with the Association of Recognised English Language Services and the British Association of State English Language Teaching. In other words, these partnerships mean that this scheme covers a wide range of institutions and English language courses, including private language schools, independent schools, colleges, universities and providers of home tuition courses. Every accredited institution is routinely inspected by British Council staff and all further and higher education courses are routinely inspected by government officials.
So all of the potential institutions you could be studying at will have guaranteed levels of teaching. But what are the types of accredited English language institutions to choose from? This really depends on your age. Until you are 16, you will probably study at a language centre or independent school as part of a summer or Easter holiday course. When you are over 16, you will be able to study at any of the following English language schools:
Private Language Schools: There a wide variety of courses available from private language schools which cater for all levels. Students can also choose between short and long courses to suit their needs.
Language Centres: These centres can be either privately or publicly owned and run. They offer students short courses, typically during the summer and Easter holidays, allowing students to improve their English language whilst combining study with other activities and sightseeing.
Independent Schools and Colleges: These schools offer students a wide variety of courses covering a diverse range of subjects, all taught and examined in English. English language support for international students is often readily available and students are encouraged to attend these sessions if required.
Further Education Institutions: These institutions provide a wide range of courses for all ability levels. Students often choose between full or part-time study as well as the added benefit of being able to join native English speakers on vocational or academic courses. Further, international students have the option to combing an academic or vocational course with a language, called an English Plus course.
Higher Education Institutions: These institutions, typically referred to as Universities, offer students the chance to develop their academic skills in a specific subject area. There are a wide range of full and part time courses available but international students will be required to demonstrate that their English as a foreign language ability is of an Intermediate standard or better.
