Coming to the UK

Making your preparations for coming to the UK may seem daunting and complicated but it needn’t be, you just need to be organised. Advice For You is here to help with a checklist of things to consider when making your plans. Of course, your preparations should for coming to the UK should already began when you decided you’d like to study in the UK. Perhaps you have already been confirmed on a course and are now preparing to move to the UK? These pages will give you the low-down on what to expect, what to bring and how to plan.

Below is a summary of the things you need to think about and is quite general. If you would like to discuss the entire process of coming to the UK to study with an expert, please contact us now.

  • Think ahead: apply and plan early
  • Get your funding arranged as soon as possible (see our funding section)
  • Check that your passport will be valid for your date of travel
  • Apply for your UK student visa
  • Make arrangements for your housing (our housing clinic can help)
  • Arrange your insurance
  • Book your flights

This checklist provides you examples of the things you will need to consider. However, if you are not a national of the EU member states then you will need to prepare in additional ways. In order to gain entry clearance once you arrive in the UK, you will need the following:

  • UK student visa valid for the whole of your course
  • Your letter of acceptance
  • Proof of finances and that you can support yourself
  • Proof of your housing arrangements
  • A small amount of cash and traveller’s cheques

We also have a few tips that we think all international language students can apply when coming to the UK:

  • Bring an address book with useful directions and contact details, such as your school and housing
  • Any medicines you need along with a letter from your Doctor
  • Make photocopies of all your important documents. Take some with you and leave another set with your family
  • Don’t bring any sharp objects such as scissors
