Student Accomodation

Being successful in your studies is largely down to the environment you are in; a good course with good support but more importantly the right accommodation. That’s why it is so important to get your accommodation arranged as soon as possible. There are many different student accommodation options available to you. The option you choose will largely be determined by the length and type of course you will be studying. Below is the low-down on the various options.

Home Stay: Home stays are a popular form of student accommodation amongst international students in the UK. A home stay involves staying with a host family and living in their family home. You will have fantastic opportunities to practice your English. Host families are chosen carefully and provide a great deal of support and guidance to the students who stay with them. Your meals will be provided for you and the only downside is that you will probably have to share a bathroom with the family you are staying with.

Hostels: There are many different types of hostels throughout the UK. They cater to backpackers and student travellers. They are relatively cheap and can offer a very sociable and lively atmosphere. Rooms come in a variety of options, from your own to shared dorms with bunk-beds.

Bedsits: The bedsit is a very popular form of student accommodation amongst students. If you rent a bedsit you will get a 1 modest sized room which will be both your bedroom and your sitting room, hence the name bedsit. You will likely to only have a bed, desk and wardrobe, although you can of course decorate to add your own feel to the place. There may be a washbasin and mirror in your room, but the kitchen, toilet and shower will be shared with other residents. Costs are quite low and students get to experience the freedom of having their own place.

Halls of Residence: Halls of Residence are exactly like bedsits, except the block you live in is likely to be much larger. Many students from the UK choose to live in Halls in their first year at University as it is a great way to socialise and meet new people. Your meals will probably be provided for you but you will also have access to cooking facilities. You will not be responsible for paying any utility bills as they will be provided by your school.

Studio Flats: Studio flats are the next step up in student accommodation from the bedsit. You will still have one room which serves as both your bedroom and sitting room, but it is likely to be much larger than the bedsit. You will have a separate kitchen and bathroom.

Flat Shares: A flat share is where you share a house or flat with other people.
