There are many different ways that the rank of UK universities in 2009 has been calculated. We’ve already included one – the 2009 UK Good University Guide – and for balance, we thought we’d include the UK University Ranking 2009 from The Guardian.
The UK University Ranking 2009 rates 46 subject areas at 149 universities using the following criteria:
- Teaching quality, as rated by final-year students in the National Student Survey (NSS)
- Feedback (assessment), as rated by final-year students in the NSS
- Spending per student
- Staff/student ratio
- Job prospects
- Value added – comparing students’ individual degree results with their entry qualifications
- Entry qualifications (UCAS tariff score)
It is really important to note that this ranking of universities guide actually takes account of student feedback, specifically the satisfaction of students, in key areas such as teaching. This guide is here to help students and in particular undergraduates. Therefore, universities guide aims to rank universities based on teaching and not research ratings.
So take a look at the rankings and contact us if you have any questions.
Now that you’ve seen the rankings you can begin planning to apply to University. Part of your student life will involve part-time work. Why not get a head-start on everyone else and take your pick of the best student jobs going. You can find a range of advice and tools for you in our student jobs section, where there is also a link to our job listings.

Unfortunately, all of those universities with undergrad intake in Jan/Feb are former Polytechnics.
This post is going to cause a bit of concern to many students.
In the UK we had a two level higher education system consisting of polytechnics and universities. Only 5% of the population went to Universities. Entrance requirement was higher, the courses tougher.
In recent years the government has allowed the polytechnics to rename themselves universities.
Most cities had a university. It’s arguably more important than ever now that you choose your choice of college carefully.
Universities now fall into two types:
1)Traditional ‘red brick’ universities such as:
University of Manchester, University of Nottingham…typically indicated by the name of a city and the word “university”.
2) Everything else
such as Manchester Metropolitan University
or: University of Lancashire
where Lancashire is a geographic area, a county and not a city.
These are usually former polytechnics which are not as good as the traditional red brick universities.
So choose your college carefully.
None of the colleges listed in the other reply are for traditional red brick universities.
Universities usually take in undergraduates in September or October of the year.

Further comment.
I’m 40 years old, I’ve been to a traditional very good university.
I would say if you want to apply to a good university which will be recognised by an employer and respected and increase your chances of getting a well paid job, then I would choose a university in the top 55.
I would not select a university in the range of 55-120. I come from a under priviledged background with a state education. So, even from a state educated background (no private tuition, or expensive tuition) should be able to apply successfully to a university in the top 55.

The two universities which are supposedly the best in the country for these types of subjects are:
1)Imperial College of Science and Technology
2)The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) but which is now part of Manchester University.
I personally went to UMIST and I know of its record.

I want to know what’s the UCD(University Colege Dublin) Ranking.
Thanks

UCD will not be in these rankings as they refer solely to UK universities. You will need to look at a ranking for Irish universities, and in order to see a comparison between UCD and the UK universities you will need to find a world ranking.

It’s somewhat rare for students to enjoy their jobs in college. I know my first internship in college showed me that I didn’t want to work in that industry.
Sometimes just working at the school cafeteria can be the perfect fit for a student. It beats filing papers all day in a cubicle, and you usually get some free food!

Hi Ashok. The are many universities which offer economics courses. Regarding the October intake, it depends on the university and the course level. Are you looking to study for an undergraduate degree or a postgraduate qualification? If you’re at postgraduate level, you may find that many courses start in January.
Another thing to consider is budget; I assume you’ll be an international student and if you want to study at a world class British university, then the fees will be expensive.
