Many subjects taught at so called elite universities in the UK have been reported as some of the worst degrees in the country, according to The Times newspaper.
Universities in the UK can be grouped according to performance. Universities in the Russell and 1994 Groups and considered to be the best. However, students have criticised 33 courses provided by these universities. Of the worst ranked universities, 3 courses were at Edinburgh, five at Manchester and Seven at Bristol.
Social Work courses performed pretty badly, with Swansea, Brunel, Royal Holloway and Birmingham City being reported in the bottom five worst universities in the UK. The business course at the University of Arts London was the fifth member of this group.
In fact, the Swansea Social Work course received the worst rating of all courses in a national survey of 200,000 students. It achieved a performance rating of only 44%. But how bad is bad? The average worst UK university could only muster half the score given to the best UK university course, finance and accounting at Exeter – it scored 96.2%.
The second highest university course by mark was Sunderland’s law course, which got 95.8%, with Medical Science / Pharmacy at Keele University in close third, scoring 95%.
Common complaints of the worst universities included rising class sizes, reduced teaching time and the substitution of professors with cheaper, postgraduate students. The vice-president of the National Union of Students said, “It is vital that institutions listen to student feedback on the development of courses provided in higher education.”
“I think lecturers welcome feedback from students and some of the very best lecturers really want to her what their students think of them.”
The worst univerisites were criticised for not informing potential students about the minimal teaching time of some courses by Anna Fazackerley, a member of Policy Exchange, a think tank. Anna commented, “The government should collect data about how many hours of teaching students receive, whether postgraduate students or professors are doing that teaching and how many students are being packed into classes.”
“This information is kept incredibly quiet, but parents and students have a right to know what they are paying for.”
As you might expect following the exposure of the worst UK universities, there are signs that students are rebelling at the clear lack of teaching time. In May 2009, students studying Economics at Bristol University submitted joint complains about marking which had been done by fellow students and not the lecturer, quickly rising class sizes and even exam lengths being reduced from the traditional three hours, to two.
Law students at Manchester University walked out of lectures in another sign of protest and marched on the vice-chancellor’s office when they were told of plans to reduce teaching time. In fact, Manchester University was highlighted as one of the worst universities in England and despite their politics course being ranked 2,064th, teaching time is to be reduced further. Manchester University have acknowledged the issue and said it would review teaching on all its courses.
“We have had instances of students saying they have not seen any academic for two years. That is not acceptable,” a spokesman said.
The survey was devised by the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills. Asking a total of 22 questions, it was hoped to be a tool for students to decide where to study. The worst university survey covered questions about student experience and how happy they felt.
A spokesman said, “The National Student Survey is part of the whole process of enabling potential students to have as much information as possible, so they can make their own, informed choice about which institutions to apply to. It’s up to the students.”
Thai teachers’ ignorance. After being reported , the children sexual abused (for more than 10 yrs) at huamark, at school condo by school farang teachers, no help taken by admin thai VP because of school owner’s instruction. Sadly that Mr. Chavalit muannug was VP at that time, otherwise lot of thai children could have been saved.
THai inter private uni uses american texts, but NO american professors (twelve times more expensive than hiring lao, india, tagalouge, burmeses, thai, around $1,400/ month ) Education and life success starts from having active, intelligent classmates. You will find no such classmates for your children at AU. No academic freedom at private uni, you must listen to your bosses (bosses make money from your class’ students). If you have no big ears, AU is not the right place for u.

Help inform students at Assumption uni, thailand. As soon as you come out of first toilet (whether you see or not the summary answer in the bin) miss chow, protor, marketing dept will inform u “cheating, go to see the dean with me”.
Thai Proctors are used to help avoid students cheating. Miss chow is here to destroy thai students. Miss Chow, if you are really smart, you return home to help aung san sui gee.

Thai privatge uni helps increase natural resources consumption: Only one subject, more than 60% (700 persons) retake again 10,000 baht. It is not a matter of gain or loss, electricity for air con, water, gasoline, air poluttion by students and teachers and staffs for last two months wasting. Really exhausted, to change stone to diamond. Poorly learned students should be taken care by THai teachers. A part of study failure, because of cheap labor from india, burma, tagalogue, belgium and department heap (do everything to increase money from tutorial class)

Studying in Thailnd, go to public uni is much better. Teachers at private uni are india, burmese and tagalog, but they do help increase the school revenue by using their poor knowledge to set the question, grade paper. They do help failing the students to guarantee teaching job next semester.
Class evaluaton is useless, waste of time and paper cost.
The students are too poor to judge, can not speak english.
With the very poor english background, University in thai class is the best for the lazy uni students. Even the children of thai professors , they learn at Publich uni.
Learning in thailand, deveveloping country, Public institution is the best.

Thai creative thinking: Developing country, the belief of a private Uni professor. professor taught students cash donation 10 or 20 thousand baht to tammakai temple for heaven after dead.
Comments:
1. Thai children sexual abused for years by foreigners (teachers) at abac condo, where you and your husband were?
2. Not only the delivery of broken english and your poor lecture you dismiss class late because of the religious conversation belief at tammakai temple. Travelling time to school, many hours , don’t you know the worst traffic at bangkok.
3. You have never worked harder than the others for your own students. Thai students are too good to embarrass you. Your were appointed to teach because the chair knows that your students will have to pay for tutorial class at her home.
At Assumption university, thailand, Accountng chairperson and supaporn lee break the university rules- tutorial class for money and cash. Chairperson is the subject proof reader every accounting subject. The one to be blamed is the Professor Narumol T, Chairperson’ closed friend.

A class taught by Professor June Bernadet at Bangbor university for eight years old students.
The followings are needed if you want to learn with her.
a. both hands must be on the table.
b. text must be on the table.
c. the students must not talk in her class.
d. the students’s fces must look at her, no face turn left or
right.
e. the students must not turn face to the back.
f. she can come late, if the students are not punctual, sing a song in front of class.
g. she teaches by yelling, opposite of the japanese voice soft sound.
i. At bangbor university, four times violating the dress code (no shirt tug in the trousers, too short the skirt wearing, kicking unversity ducks, jeans wearing, no school belt or button) after cash payment per time 8 dollars, the students will not be allowed to register subjects for coming semester.
The worst thing is at the minute you step in the bangbor campus, Assumption uni, a lot of security quards and ex-brothers (hunred of ex-cath-brothers working here) will look at your skirts (eyes measuring only 2 inches short).

Included too much the lessons for mid term (7 weeks) compared to other thai university. With no entrance examination. Thai university students at assumpation university have to pay extra money for thai tutorial classes almost every subject learning at AU. Several Hundred of students from Mainland china are on probation. I used to learn three major different required subjects in one semester with one teacher Dr. Amara. I paid her for extra class at her home, big well known tutorial shop at Bangbor. Students can not use what she teaches for Master degree accounting at CHura university.

AT AU, many don’t have the degree in what they have been teaching. Do you think professor from engineer can teach accounting, economic can teach accounting, economic can teach finance, medical doctor teach english language, accounting from ramkhamhaeng teach english language class. Yes they can because of having no entrance exam, majority of students – very very very very poor at english.

Incredible, thai englsh teacher at Au for basic english class subject can not even speak simple english conversation class.
Don’t ask about the native english speaker. In thailand, any university with no entrance examination, don’t apply. 83% of each class does not study. Lot of university rules and regulations are issued because of the poor and non-intelligent students. In stead of money investment to acquire professional teachers, you see how much au spend time and money for uniform dressing code. Ha Ha Ha

Make decsion first whether you can manage with the followings for many years learning at Bangkok. On the way to Bangna campus (one hour) by school bus, especially in the morning, staff and teachers are packed with lunch box, smelly curry and garlic smell. Some professors (nobody dare to stop farang) laugh and talk non-stop, nonsense things from humark to bangna campus university. Very, very annoying.

At thai university, if the guard finds you in the campus with the following, the thai students have to pay seven dollars to school.
1. skirt wearing as short as (very tight)everyday using by professor Lee.
2. slippers wearing to campus like Professor Jane Detnaber.
3. No shirt tug in the trousers or skirts.
4. No school belts or school buttons.
5. Smoking
6. song singing for late coming to the class taught by Professor June (don’t take morning class since there are hundreds of cars waiting in que to enter the school campus, there is only one door. Car parking is not enough (not free).

AT BANGBOR UNIVERSITY, THAILAND . THE PROFESSORS ARE NOT THE ONES TO RELEASE THE LETTER GRADE FOR THE SUBJECTS THAT THEY TEACH.

I am a third year student at bangna, thailand. My accouanting lecturer for major require subject can not use english properly She uses both thai, english and hand language to teach the students. I don’t understand thai. May be she pretends not to teach well. So that the student will attend tutorial class at her home. Incredible, the lecturer graduates with honor degree from inter-u and has more than 12 years teaching here.
Every class, she spends 40 minutes on nonsense things, sample how lazy the students are.

At Bangna A… university, thailand. Teacher, Will you please explain everything in english, i don’t understand any thai. I ask other accounting teacher to complain for me, i am afraid of beging expelled. For three hours class, you spend one hour complaining about how bad we are. But you, yourself don’t spend time on english lecture. How do you get honour degree from this university? I don’t have money to pay for tutorial class outside the school like the thai students.

I know this is about universities but colleges are the worst. for example LSBF is a highly trusted college but their conduct with international students is absolutely horrendous. I studied MBA there and have submitted my final dissertation. Now, after 3 months i am still awaiting for my dissertation result and i am not alone. We are not given any exact date when will we get out results. my college offer MBA validated by a university. when i contact that university directly they told me to deal with my college and don’t bother them again. I know a student was notified after almost a year that he has failed. When you ask for visa help college staff act real arrogantly and refuse to help. If you want to talk to a person on the phone, that person will always be busy. So, I sent them many emails and i very rarely get a reply. So I would say LSBF is the worst college in the UK.

Chairperson and department members – accounting department at ASSUMPTION UNIVERSITY- GET INVOLVED WITH THE TUTURIAL CLASS ARRANGED FOR MONEY OUTSIDE BANGNA AND HUAMARK CAMPUS. SUBordinates have to follow chair’s advice for her (of course not affect her part time job) Easy to controal since subordinates are Indians, philipines, Burmese. Every meeting, like a hell I have to acknowledge how out of dated knowledge shown by the Chair, not only the meeting at ABAC.

Publich international university in thailand is worth the choosing, since They hire qualified professor from America. Some international shool use professors from very poor developing countries. Some uses only the former students to teach at the school. One private university that i see, the quality is very very low.

I have experience working in the thai developing country- private college. The professors come from india, burma, philippine. They are not very professional in what they teach. They get less pay. They fail the students because the professors have no knowledge in what they have to check the exam papers. Don’t believe in what you see, big and beautiful camplus is nothing for the students’ future. The school hires very young graduate students to work as ajarn, because of very low salary. You will not use every material that the school test for the real life working. If you don’t think you can finish within 4 years and a half, don’t choose. The more income earned is the more enrollment paid by the stupid students.

I just wanted to advise any international student thinking of coming to study in the UK to think twice. They won’t grade you fairly. They will fail you to pay them again. If you pass you will pass with the lowest grades.

Hi
I just liked to say that the UK universities mostly lack the teaching skill. The faculties mostly teach the bare outline and make sure the students fend for themselves when it come to exams. Some of the colleges intentionally grade the international students poorly and lack any kind of fair treatment. Paying a lot and moving a long way from home doesn’t help either, if the treatment here doesn’t work out for the better.

The QAA could find out about complaints on Universities and those indulging in course misrepresentation by getting mail ids of international students and getting their confidential feedback as regards satisfaction of courses they attended .
Likely those students will respond only after getting their certificates and returning to their home country – fear of prejudicial treatment being one of the main reasons .

This is only the tip of the ice-berg.
What about Universities which have not been exposed because students fear harassment, prejudicial treatment and complaint procedure being twisted to the detrimental interests of the complainants.
There are a vast number of students who have been affected by course misrepresentation and they have not complained because they fear the ire of the faculty.

I completely agree Mereena, in that we’re only beginning to really understand the current situation. I’ve spoken with students around the country who have experienced a range of pressures to respond positively and generously to quality questionnaires.
A key problem is that quality questionnaires are an internally administered and managed process and so the potential for the UK’s worst universities to exert pressure is great. I therefore agree that there should be government intervention in the collection and analysis of this data. After all, with the fees that international students pay, the rising cost of top-up fees for home students and further, the top-up provided by government for every home student, any Government should be concerned with value for money. The UK’s worst universities certainly aren’t value for money and worse, they can actually damage the excellent worldwide reputation that the UK’s education system has.
However, I do see problems with direct intervention – namely data protection – possibly preventing collection of 100% ‘clean’ data. I think this kind of initiative would need to be strongly student led in order to create pressure for change and to expose the worst UK universities.
