UKBA Removes Institutions from the Tier 4 Sponsor Register

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has recently revised the tier 4 sponsor register and has removed several institutions from the list. UKBA announced on the 25th August that all applicants should ensure that the institution they are applying to is on the tier 4 Sponsor Register when they apply for a UK student visa. You should check before submitting your application that your chosen institutions have not been suspended or withdrawn from the list. If your chosen institution is not on the list, the embassy will not be able to grant you a student visa.  If you have a visa letter that you got before your approved education provider’s licence was suspended, and you have already been granted permission to enter the United Kingdom, but you have not yet traveled, you are advised not to travel until your educational institution’s status has been resolved.
Check that your institutions are listed in UK BA sponsor list please follow this link and feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

Good luck with your visa application.

Read our follow up to this post, an Update on Suspended Colleges From Tier 4.

The Tier 4 Register of Sponsors is being regularly updated by this website. You can view it here: Tier 4 Sponsors Register.

Update 31 January 2010: All Student Visa applications from Northern India, Nepal and Bangladesh are currently on hold due to a sudden rise in numbers. Every Tier 4 applicant from these countries will be affected. This will compound issues surrounding the suspension of colleges from the Tie 4 Register of Sponsors.

    • Hi Charnjit

I think you should just wait to find out the result of your current Tier 4 (General) Student application, as your visa request should be placed on hold until your college’s suspension is lifted.

Keep an eye on the Tier 4 Sponsors Register for an idea of when you can expect to hear back from the UKBA regarding your application.

    • If you got your tier 4 student visa before 5 October 2009

You will have to obtain permission from the UK Border Agency to change education provider. You can ask for this permission by sending an email to MigrantReporting@ukba.gsi.gov.uk. You must include the following details:

      - the new sponsor’s name, address and contact details; and
      - details of the new course, including the start and end date; and
      - if the new course is shorter or longer than your current course

The UK Border Agency will write to you confirming they’ve received your request. As long as they can confirm the following information, you will be given permission to change tier 4 sponsors:

      - your new education provider is currently licenced under the Tier 4 Register of Sponsors; and
      - your new school has accepted you and wants to be your new sponsor; and
      - your new planned course of study meets the necessary requirements to qualify under the Points Based System

Once you have emailed the UK Border Agency with the above information and have received an acknowledgment from them you can actually start your new course without waiting for the result of your request. However, this is at your own risk as the UK Border Agency may well decide to refuse you permission to switch sponsors.

If you fail to ask the UK Border Agency for their permission to switch sponsors you’re permission to stay in the United Kingdom as a student will be limited.

If you got your tier 4 student visa after 5 October 2009

It is much simpler to change education provider in this situation. You just have to make a new Tier 4 (General) Student visa application supported with a new visa letter of confirmation of acceptance for studies from your new tier 4 sponsor.

You will not be able to start your new course until your new visa application is approved by the UK Border Agency. You are free to leave your current sponsor but do so entirely at your own risk, as the UKBA may refuse your application meaning you may not be able to return to your original course.

    • Hi Layeeq

Your visa application should be placed on hold whilst the UK Border Agency inspect your college.

You should keep checking the Tier 4 Sponsors Register to see when you college’s suspension is lifted.

    • Hi Nayan

You will not be able to travel to the UK until your college’s suspension is lifted. As of 29 January 2010 your college does not appear on the sponsor register. Therefore I don’t think you’ll be able to start in February so you should contact your college to defer your start date.

You will have to postpone the departure date of your ticket. Speak to your travel agent or airline about this. You could also consider student insurance which protects against any loss of tuition fees or travel costs. Click the banner below for more details:

Once you have emailed the UK Border Agency and have received an acknowledgment from them you can actually start your new course without waiting for the result of your request. However, this is at your own risk as the UK Border Agency may well decide to refuse you permission to switch sponsors.

Once your request to change tier 4 sponsor has been granted, you can either extend your visa then or wait until a time nearer your visa’s expiration.

    • Hi Choodamani

Any visa applications made where the school or college has been suspended from the Tier 4 sponsor register during the application, a hold is meant to be placed so no decision given until the UK Border Agency’s issue are resolved.

It is typically taking 3-6 weeks for schools and colleges to be inspected and to have the suspension lifted. However, some people here have reported colleges still being suspended some 3 months on.

Also, some students have had their applications refused with the reason given that their college is not on the Register of Sponsors.

Keep us posted with any updates you get.

    • Hi Omer

I don’t think you can keep changing your sponsor whilst your application is pending. I think you’re just wasting your time and effort.

According to the new Tier 4 rules, your application should be placed on hold by the UKBA until the college resolves any issues – either their suspension if lifted or their licence is withdrawn.

I think you should wait for the outcome of your visa application and take it from their. Keep us updated with your progress.

That’s quite a wide question. Could you narrow it down about – do you want to know how it would affect current students in the UK, people who’ve recently applied for visas or students who’ve enrolled by not yet applied for a visa?

Look forward to hearing from you.

    • The UKBA Tier 4 Sponsors Register is updated on a regular basis – they have obviously downloaded the list and published it on their website before they were removed. There is no point in applying for a visa if the College has been removed from the sponsors Register as your visa will be refused and you will have wasted your money. Look for a college who are still on the list and apply to them instead.

    • Hi Rezwan

As of 29 January 2010, London College of Law and Management does not appear on the Tier 4 Register of Sponsors. Have you already applied for your visa? If not, then I’d suggest you wait until the college resolves any issues the UK Border Agency has and they get their sponsor licence back.

I can’t comment on whether the college is fake or not as I don’t know when they were removed from the register or even if they were on it in the first place. However, it they placed a link to the list from their site, I’d be surprised if they weren’t legitimate. Have you spoken with the college for an update on the situation?

Looking forward to hearing more about your situation.

As of 29 January 2010, Guildhall College does not appear on the Tier 4 Register of Sponsors. Have you already applied for a visa? If you haven’t, I suggest you don’t until the college resolves any issues with the UK Border Agency – this is to avoid an unnecessary visa refusal.

Do give me some more details and an update on your situation.

Now it is not listed in Tier4 lists. Now can you advice me what should i do? Can i transfer to the other college when i get to uk? Do i have to apply for the visa again? I am very worried about the my parents as they have some how manage to provide me with the money.
I really need your advice in this situation.Hope to get a mail as soon as possible

    • Hi Shaish

Thanks for your comments. Try not to worry too much, I will try to clarify the situation for you.

Many students seem to be experiencing a problem with Holborn College. They appear to have been suspended from the Tier 4 Register of Sponsors for a considerable amount of time now. Have you spoken to the college and/or your agent for an update on the situation? Has the college been inspected by the UK Border Agency. You should begin to put pressure on the college to provide you with information. You will also have to keep in touch with them in order to defer the start date of your course. This means you will have to extend your visa in the UK at some point in time.

You may not find it easy to get a refund and change college whilst Holborn College is just suspended – you should check the college’s terms & conditions. I imagine that a full refund is only given following a visa refusal, which won’t apply in your case. However, if they Holborn College are withdrawn from the Register permanently then I’m sure you’d be able to get a refund. If not, you’d have a good case to sue them. I’d suggest you also consider insurance against any loss of your tuition fees, because of a situation just like this. Click the banner below for more details.

    • Hi Shiva

Don’t worry too much as you shouldn’t really notice a change in day-to-day life at your college. As they have been suspended pending investigation, they just won’t be able to recruit any new students.

Do you need to renew your visa anytime soon? If you do, you can submit your application but it will be kept on hold until the college has satisfied the issues raised by the UK Border Agency. In the event that your college is withdrawn from the Tier 4 Register of Sponsors for ever, your leave to stay in the UK will be limited in the following way:

      - to 60 days if you were not involved in the reasons why your approved education provider had their licence withdrawn (the UKBA will not limit your permission to stay if you have less than six months left. You may want to apply for permission to stay with another approved education provider during this time);
      - immediately if the UKBA think you were involved in the reasons why your sponsor’s licence was withdrawn.

As of 29 January 2010, London School of Accountancy & Management does not appear on the Tier 4 Register of Sponsors. We have no details as to when it was removed from the list. I can only suggest that you keep on eye on the list to see if and when your college is re-included.

What’s your situation? Have you already applied for a visa to study at this college? Are you in the UK?

Let me know some more details.

You should contact a fully regulated immigration lawyer for a discussion of the details of your own case.

I do however know that you will not be able to travel to the UK on your old visa, at it is for a different college. You will have to apply for a new visa, which is tied to your new college.
