UK Ban on Visas for Indian Students Lifted

The UK has lifted a ban on student visas for applicants from Northern India. The ban was introduced last month after a surge in applications from this region.

Pat McFadden, Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills, said, “I am delighted to be able to announce today that from 1 March this suspension will be lifted for all students wanting to study higher education courses, whether foundation degrees, undergraduate or postgraduate.”

The suspension will remain in place for students wanting to study at lower levels, including short-term language courses.

Since the end of January 2010, all Indian Tier 4 (General) Student visa applications were suspended.

  • Hi Daniel,
    Thanks for replying..
I had a few Question in my mind and I was wondering if, you could help me?…

    1. To show the funds, I am using My joint saving account with my Grandmother. Do I need to give anything from her?…
    2. The bank gave me a Printed Bank statement with no logo but bank’s logo’s Symbol, Bank’s stamp, Manager stamp, Manager’s Signature and Manager wrote Banks Phone no. on it. They also gave me a letter Printed on the letter head pad that, Conforms the funds being held and it is also Stamped, Dated and Signed. They said that’s all they could do. Is it alright?..
    3. I took the statement on 12 Aug so, what is the last date I can submit it with my application?..
    4. As I am a 17 years old general student living independently, they ask for temporary accommodation address in the application form . My ant lives in England and she is a British citizen. Can I fill her address in?..

Looking forward to hearing from you..

    • Hi Satinder

Thanks for coming back to me.

NQF level 3 is not a degree level equivalent so your application will still be on hold until the suspension is completely lifted.

Here’s how the NQF can be mapped:

      Level 1: GCSE at grades D – G
      Level 2: GCSE at grades A* – C
      Level 3: A / AS Level
Level 4: Certificate of Higher Education
Level 5: Diplomas of higher/further education and foundation degrees
Level 6: Bachelor degrees, graduate certificates and diplomas
Level 7: Masters degrees, postgraduate certificates and diplomas
      Level 8: Doctorates

  • Hi Daniel
Please, tell me if, you have any idea on when will the tier 4 suspension be fully lifted in North India.

    • Hi Satinder

Really no idea I’m afraid. But the suspension has been lifted for courses of degree level, which I think make up a large bulk of applications from that part of the world.

What course are you/have you applied for?

Plz I will suggest u to visit the VFS office for more details.

    • Hi Javed

There is still no news on this issue I’m afraid. I am currently drafting a letter to several MPs to request a Parliamentary Question to look into this issue. I will update with progress.

  • Hi Daniel, I can see it has been a long time since the last comment. I just got accepted at the University of Liverpool and waiting for my CAS certificate to arrive. Do you have any information about the ban on student visa for the Bangladeshi students? Will the ban be lifted by this August?

    • If the news in your country quotes the British High Commissioner as saying that the ban won’t be lifted until September, then that must be taken as trustworthy I’d of thought.

    • No news on when the suspension will be lifted Mohiuddin – I’m sure they’ll review the situation at the end of March. At least applicants whose scheduled appointments are suspended will be prioritised for appointments when the UK Border Agency begins to accept Tier 4 applications again.

    • Hi Mohiuddin

VFS said this on 23 February 2010, so I imagine that applications are currently being processed:

23 February 2010: Temporary closure of visa application centres in Bangladesh – Dhaka, Sylhet and Chittagong will be closed on 14, 15 and 16 March 2010. This is due to the installation of a global IT update programme affecting all High Commissions and Embassies. The last day on which VFS will accept new applications will be Thursday 11 March. The visa application centres will re-open on Wednesday 17 March. During this closure, customers will be able to collect their passports from the visa application centre between 09:00 and 10:00 only. We aim to resume a normal visa service by Wednesday 17 March. Customers who intend to travel to the UK around these dates are advised to submit their visa applications as soon as possible. Please note that the UK Border Agency office and customer enquiry email address will also be closed on 14, 15 and 16 March, after which we aim to resume a normal visa service as quickly as possible.
