Rumours are rife that the Home Secretary’s recent announcement of a temporary cap on UK immigration has caused a revolt by cabinet members, leading to a watering down of the Conservatives flagship election promise.
Vince Cable has so far failed to fully back the cap, saying that it must be implemented in a flexible way to protect businesses. He goes on to describe the details are far from finalised, saying many ministers had warmed to the idea of a cap, but could not agree on how it should be implemented. Tension has been caused over concerns of industries such as education and universities in particular, amidst deep cuts to government funding of universities.
The Liberal Democrats strongly opposed the Conservatives immigration policy throughout the election campaign yet did not seek to change key terms during negotiations for power.
Businesses have been vocal in expressing their concerns that any cap could be bad for the economy and does not fit with David Cameron’s election promise of “Britain Open for Business.” The cap could stop business taking on extra workers during seasonal rises in demand and certain industries do need to recruit skilled workers with particular skills, such as cooks and care workers.
It is also feared that any permanent cap which may be extended to Tier 4 and UK student visas, would impact very negatively on UK universities, some of whom rely on international students for 70% of their income.
“The new regime has to accommodate those concerns,” Mr Cable said. “It has to be implemented in a flexible way.”
The coalition government has a long way to go to convince the public that a cap will not stifle growth and damage the economy further; many are nervous of the cuts already staring them in the face.
Is it just me or is the British passport going through Inflation?
I just get the feeling it’s not worth as much as it used to…
Multicultural is a nice word but when you support all the values of all the people, then you basically can’t sustain your own which is just as bad as saying you have no values what so ever.
