Suspended Colleges From Tier 4 – Master List of College Suspensions

The following list of schools and colleges have been removed from the Tier 4 Register of Sponsors. This list is historically accurate back to the start of December 2009.

As schools get their sponsor licenses under Tier 4 back, we will place a strike-through on their name.

This list of suspended colleges in the UK will be updated daily.

If you notice a school or college that you think has been suspended from the Sponsors Register, but is not on our UKBA suspended colleges list, then please leave a comment and we will add it to our list.

    • Thanks Mail.

Leeds Professional College is still suspended from the Register.

I’ve added them to the list and will strike through when their suspension is resolved.

      • What are the chances of this college to get back to the registers list?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 3 Thumb down 1

        • Hi Sandy

I’m not sure. At any rate, it will take them some time to be visited by the UK Border Agency and for the inspection team to report their findings. There are also a series of written exchanges following the UK Border Agency’s visit and this exchange of letters alone lasts 32 days.

There’s no statement on the colleges website so I have asked them for a press release.

          • Thank u Daniel for the reply.

Would you kindly tell me, if u have any idea about the bogus-ness of this college? Is this college a really bogus one? I paid the required fees to the college and they sent me the Visa Letter. Then i took the date to apply for the visa….But before the date arrived, college got suspended. Now, Daniel, what would u suggest me to do?
If the chances of this college to get back to the list is really few, then what shall i do to refund my money

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 3 Thumb down 1

            • I’ve no idea Sandy, sorry.

You’d have to check the school’s terms and conditions. Most schools and colleges in the UK will only provide a refund upon receipt of original visa refusal documents.

          Thanks for your comments.

As of 9 March 2010 their licence is still suspended. Do you know if it has been suspended for long?

Your friend will only experience a problem if their sponsor’s licence is permanently withdrawn.

I have no new news about LTC College; I’m chasing them for an update this week.

Being suspended since November 2009 does sound like quite a long time. Have you spoken to the college and/or your agent?

    • Hi Ramandeep

If you’re education provider has their licence withdrawn permanently, your permission to enter the UK will be limited in the following way:

      - to 60 days if you were not involved in the reasons why your approved education provider had their licence withdrawn (the UKBA will not limit your permission to stay if you have less than six months left. You may want to apply for permission to stay with another approved education provider during this time);
      - immediately if the UKBA think you were involved in the reasons why your sponsor’s licence was withdrawn.

I think you still have a long time left on your visa for either your college’s suspension to be resolved, or to change college should you need to.

      Where are you studying?

Keep my updated on your situation.

    • Hi Asif

This college operates out of a business center and the college’s phone and fax line have not been disconnected, so doubt they have shut down.

Are they currently closed for a break or are you meant to be taking classes right now?

If your college’s sponsor licence is withdrawn permanently, your permission to enter the UK will be limited in the following way:

      - to 60 days if you were not involved in the reasons why your approved education provider had their licence withdrawn (the UKBA will not limit your permission to stay if you have less than six months left. You may want to apply for permission to stay with another approved education provider during this time);
      - immediately if the UKBA think you were involved in the reasons why your sponsor’s licence was withdrawn.

I’ll contact the college for a press release and post any reply I receive.

Keep me posted on your situation too.

Are you meant to be taking classes there right not, or is the school closed for a break? See me previous reply above to a similar question – their contact numbers all still work so that does suggest they’re still in business.

Quite a few people have been asking about this college – I will try to contact them to find out anything I can.

In the mean time, we should all keep each other updated too.

    • Hi Neeti

London SAM has been suspended for sometime now. But, they’ve released the following statement on their website (other than that, I know no more – I will try to contact them):

LondonSAM wishes to make the following announcement:

LondonSAM’s Tier 4 Sponsorship Licence has been put on hold by UKBA. The College is continuing with its normal activities from guidance given by UKBA; it will carry on with its obligations as a Sponsor. There will not be any interruptions to any lectures.

We are awaiting further clarification from UKBA. As soon as we have determined the reason, we will address the situation as soon as possible. Meanwhile, please note:

      1. Those who are enrolled with us at the moment will continue with their studies as normal.
      2. Students NOT attending lectures in accordance with their timetable will be reported to UKBA.
      3. For those students who have been granted visas and are on their way to study, the College will fulfil its obligations.
      4. Until clear guidance from UKBA is given, we will not be issuing any further visa letters.
      5. We will update this web site as soon as there is further development.

    • Hi Neema

SIRM have made the following statement available via their website:

Suspension of Sponsor Licence (The School of Information Risk Management)

We would like to inform you that SIRM Sponsor Licence has been temporarily suspended due to unknown reasons on Monday, 18th January 2010.

      What happened if suspended:
During suspension, college can operate as normal, teach and carry on the with education provisions. The only thing college cannot do is, Sponsoring a Migrant which means we can’t admit new students and issue visa letters.

      What next:
Home Office will visit us at the earliest and then college will be given 28 days to respond to their queries to satisfy them to be re-instated.

      Visa expiry students:
Those students, whose visas are due to expire by the end of January 2010, please contact a member of Admin Department so that they can instruct you further.

      Change of college:
Students, who wish to withdraw their course and obtain fee refund due to sponsor licence suspension, are not eligible for refund until we hear a final decision from Home Office. You are requested to wait for further updates.

Affect on Visa for local and international student:
Suspension of sponsor licence does not affect student’s visa.

Students who have been granted visa by BHC can travel to UK and join SIRM for their studies.

Students, who have applied for visa from outside/inside UK (at BHC/Home Office) and are yet to obtain the visa, are requested to wait. Their applications are likely to be put on hold until a decision has been taken by UKBA.

      Instructions for students:
Due to your visa implications, you are required to carry on with your studies at SIRM. If you fail to do so, you will face serious problems such as cancellation of admission.

SIRM will keep updating you regarding our licence and Home Office visit.

If you wish to discuss or need further information please email us at info@sirm.ac and you will receive a prompt response.

We thank you all for your cooperation, support, trust and confidence on SIRM and we will make sure to provide you the quality education.

  • Hi can you please advise if I do get my Visa application pulled at the UK Consulate in Canberra (AUS) will I get a full refund of my fees as this is not my fault that they have had their licence suspended? My course is due to start at on the 8th of March and I may not even have a course to come back to London for!The principal was really vague and tried to palm me off when I questioned him about this.
    Looking forward to your reply!

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    • Hi Melanie, thanks for your comments.

You shouldn’t have your application pulled – it should be placed on hold and decided once the suspension has been resolved. However, in some cases students have had their applications refused. We’ve found that often students or agents can negotiate quite hard with the college and get them to cover the cost of a fresh visa application. If the college is downgraded to a B-rating I would definitely play hard-ball, as this suggests some breach of the rules on the colleges part, making them partly liable for subsequent visa refusals.

Where have you applied to study Melanie?

Keep me updated with your application, let me know if I can help in any way and good luck!

      • hi daniel
may you please enlighten me about the meaning of application being “on hold” . Does it mean that consulate already reviewed it and they have made decision , But NOT releasing it just yet until issue has been resolved? Or, it hasn’t been reviewed yet at all, because they saw that your college is amongst the suspended ones, and they’ll start to review your documents only when things are OK.
thank you, hope you could reply.

  • Are the suspended college have the same weightage as earlier ??????

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    • Hi James

If you mean would students still score the same number of points for studying at a B-rated institution, then the answer is yes. The criteria is that the college is listed on the Sponsor Register – visas are not decided based on the A or B rating.

Following an inspection, it normally takes 28 days for the UK Border Agency to report their findings. This is the minimum time following an inspection that an education provider can be re-included on the Register of Sponsors.

He’s probably right and well within his rights to insist you stay – at least until the suspension is resolved. I’m sure the college’s terms & conditions are very specific about refund policy. Have a good read of them and ask any questions you have.

      Has Guildhall been inspected yet?

There is no update on their website so I have contact them for a press release and will post anything I receive in reply.

      • Hi Daniel, at first thanks for making this kind of site or blog. I think it’s a great help. Anyways I am also a student of London East Bank College. Well, my course suppose to start on the 25th January but when I went there on the 25th they said to come back for induction next week which I attended. After that I was told to start my course from 22nd February. I went there on that day, i was given a piece of paper where it says because of the poor English language ability it is told by the UKBA that some of the students need to attend English language course and they also put a list of those students. My name was not in the list and I was told by the college admin to come back on the 15th March when my course will start. So I don’t know what’s exactly going on. On top of that I sent my passport for extension; already had my Biometric taken. Do you think there’s a possibility of my college coming back on to the Tier 4 Sponsor list? What should I do now? Any advise? For your kind information I just got enrolled as a new fresher or new student. Many thanks. Any advice/suggetion would be highly appreciated.

        • Hi Jasim

I think you’ll need to wait for the outcome of your visa extension application now. How long is left to run on your visa? if you don’t have much time you should seriously consider switching college, or you may not be able to extend your visa. But you would probably not get your fees back without a fight.

Have you had any more news from the school? I think they’re probably trying to delay the start date as long as possible, in order to give admission to as many students as possible who have been affected by the suspension.

  • Have any info when will the suspension be lifted in St.Patrick Collge. Is UKBA already conduct the inspection..How long it will last to visit and lifted the suspension..My application as a student under Tier4 is on process in the embassy when the suspension imposed on the college and ill think that suspended UKBA license is the reason while still they holding it.The commencing date already started last Jan.25 and obviously im already running out of time. Im using a visa letter which i submitted in the embassy last dec.16,2009. If by chance that i will get visa after they lifted the suspension, is there any problem if i went there still using the visa letter or the college should provide me CAS which i think is the required for now and not the visa letter anymore. thanks

    • Hi Abby

There is still no update on that college, but they have released the following statement on their website:

Notice to all staff and students at St-Patrick’s College

      1. Some of you may be aware that St Patrick’s College UK Border Agency (UKBA) Sponsorship Licence has been temporarily suspended with effect from 18 January. Do not be alarmed. This is not a measure aimed at St Patrick’s College alone. About 60 Colleges have received similar notification. The UKBA seems to have a general query affecting the private college sector as a whole, and a response is therefore being co-ordinated at sector level by inter alia the British Accreditation Council (BAC), UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA), and Study UK.

      2. We believe that most of the UKBA ‘s questions relate to student attendance figures. It is normal procedure in such cases to suspend a College Licence for a short period whilst UKBA clarify the position. Many Colleges have gone through this procedure in the past, and many have had their Licence fully restored once the clarification has been received.

      3. Our Licence has been temporarily suspended until the UKBA has the opportunity to visit the College and satisfy themselves that our procedures comply with their requirements. We expect their visit to take place quite soon. I am confident that we will be able to answer all of the UKBA’s questions satisfactorily and that our Licence will be restored in due course. The College will of course collaborate fully with the UKBA team, and I welcome the chance to explain to them that our own procedures not only comply with, but in fact exceed, the stringent requirements which they set.

      4. Meanwhile, I wish to emphasise that pending the outcome of the investigation, the College is continuing with all of its activities in the normal way. Our induction programme has taken place as planned, our teaching programme for the new term will commence on 25 January, and the refurbishment of the new premises at Sheraton Street is on schedule.

      5. I wish you all a successful new term, and will keep you informed of developments. You, our students, can help the College by continuing to fulfil all the UKBA’s requirements. Please ensure that you attend all your classes on time, submit your assignments on time, and do not breach the terms of your student visa. It is vital that both the College and the students give the UKBA no reason to doubt our, or your, integrity. A student visa is granted to enable you to study. Please remember that and act accordingly.

      Raj Kumaran
      Director of Education

You are correct Abby, your visa application has been placed on hold whilst the suspension is resolved. According to the UKBA, your application should be considered on its original merits and in relation to the date you submitted your application. However, knowing VFS, I wouldn’t be surprised if some students had their applications refused.

Have you spoken with your college to defer entry to your course? What kind of information have you been able o get from them – have they provided any guidance to you about the whole situation at all?

      1. Thanks for that. I’ve now added them to the list above.

      2. Still no update I’m afraid. The whole process from inspection to re-inclusion on the Register is a long one; for example, there is a period of 32 days just for exchanging letters following an inspection!

Have you read their update on the situation, which I’ve posted in a number of places?

    • Hi Ali

      Thanks for your comment.

I don’t think that the college’s sponsor licence has been withdrawn permanently, as they are acknowledging the problem on their website:

We have come to know that fake admission/ Visa letters are being issued by unauthorised persons. We advise the students and relevant authorities to confirm the admission from the college.

Remember that the process to be re-included on the Register is a long one; in fact, following a visit by the UKBA, there is a 32 day period of exchanging written correspondence!

As soon as we hear anything, you can be sure we’ll post it here immediately. I’ll chase them for an update on the situation.

You know, the college is still under investigation. It will take more time than we are expecting. Believe me I am 98% sure, it is very difficult for the college to get back its position…
The college will try to go through up to April to complete our current phase.
Best of LUCK my dear sister.

    • Hi Payal

No, you should not be affected by your college’s sponsor licence suspension. They will not be able to bring any new students to the UK whilst they have no licence.

You will experience inconvenience should you need to extend your student visa whilst your college is suspended; your application will be placed on hold in this case until the suspension is resolved.

If your college’s sponsor licence is withdrawn permanently, you will be contact by the UK Border Agency and your permission to enter the UK will be limited. As long as you’ve done nothing wrong as an individual, then you will be given time to find a new sponsor and make a new General Student Visa application from within the UK.

Hope this helps, keep me posted on your situation.

  • Hi all,

I feel very sorry for the students!!, Closing or suspending the colleges makes their life horribly bad. Why government not understanding that when they close a college the students are the ones who seriously effected.
    1. They loose their continuity in their studies
    2. Their fees not refunded. Colleges are forcing the students to pay full or atleast 1/2 for existing students.
    3. Re-apply for another college where students have to pay the Visa fees + course fees
    4. Mentally disturbed. You wakeup in the morning and hear the news your college is closed!!

Why student unions don’t take any action. There should be some compansation for the effected students I suppose.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 1

    • Well you are right…. but I would say more than compensation, it has to be a mutual decision to be taken keeping considering students benfits… Student shouldn’t be at loss, I mean its not our faults since we are obeying all the rules and regulations of UKBA.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

      • Hi Ankita

And it’s not really the Government’s fault either. The blame for illegal activity lies squarely with the colleges. This is why students should take legal action against colleges whose licences are permanently withdrawn.

Government’s rarely provide compensation to victims of crime. If you buy a car that turns out to be stolen, you will have lost the car and the money too. Why should it be different for education? Governments have to have consistency in their actions.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

    • Hi KJ

I agree with you and do have sympathy for genuine students who have been affected by this. It is not their fault that the UK Border Agency made no efforts to inspect colleges before allowing them to sponsor migrant students.

I have no sympathy for any student who intends to use the student visa route as a means to work in the UK or slip under the radar and over-stay their visa.

The Government cannot provide compensation to students who have been affected by this. One could argue that students should be much more diligent in their research before applying to study in the UK, but I do accept that there are some rogue agents, who are fantastic salesman and can quite easily con students.

Also, there are many different types of insurance products that can be bought to cover any losses of tuition fees in circumstances such as these. Students should educate themselves about the risks and take appropriate action.

At least in the long-term, this action by the UK Border Agency will improve things for genuine students.

If a student finds that their college has broken their terms and conditions, or has their sponsor licence withdrawn permanently, they should take immediate legal action to recover costs and seek damages.

    • Hi Prova

Remember the time-frames quoted are the bare minimum and it can take several months for a suspension to be resolved.

They do have the following statement available on their website:

We regret to inform you that the Tier 4 Sponsorship Licence of Guildhall College (GC) has been put on hold by the UKBA. However, classes and normal administrative activities will continue and the college will carry on with its legal obligations.

We urge all students to read the following document (click to open):

Tier 4 Policy Guidance Page 50

We are doing our best to mitigate the situation as soon as possible. Meanwhile, please note that:

      1. Currently registered GC students will continue with their studies as normal. Students who have been granted visas and are on their way to join the College, we will fulfil our obligations.

      2. Students not attending lectures following relevant timetables will be reported to the UKBA subject to our attendance policy.

      Thank you.

      Guildhall College Management

I think the best course of action is to wait for the outcome of your college’s suspension before taking any action, especially as you have so long to run on your visa.

I do agree with you that it does seem rather strange to limit permission to enter to 60 days if a visa has more than 6 months to run. I don’t know why they don’t just limit all visas in this situation to 60 days?

How are you confused by the 60 day policy with regards to bank statements Prova? You only need to show your balance in the bank 28 days prior to your application, so plenty of time surely?

        • Hi Prova

As a student migrant already in the UK, the suspension of their licence should not affect your day-to-day life. You should still be attending classes and doing all your work towards your qualifications. You have until February 2011 until your visa expires, so plenty of time!

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    • Hi Prova

If your sponsor’s licence is permanently withdrawn, your permission to enter the UK will be limited in the following way:

      - to 60 days if you were not involved in the reasons why your approved education provider had their licence withdrawn (the UKBA will not limit your permission to stay if you have less than six months left. You may want to apply for permission to stay with another approved education provider during this time);
      - immediately if the UKBA think you were involved in the reasons why your sponsor’s licence was withdrawn.

You will therefore be given time to find a new sponsor and make a fresh application from within the UK. You do not have to show as much maintenance as when you apply from outside the UK.

As your college has had their sponsor licence suspended, they are unable to sponsor any new migrants to the UK, students or dependants.

You should also know that the rules for dependants of students with General Students Visas are changing in the UK. If you are studying a course less than 6 months you will no longer be able to bring dependants. Dependants of students studying courses below degree level will not be able to work. Read more.

What college are you currently studying at? Is it on the Sponsors Register? You will not be able to make a dependent application whilst the college is suspended.

You should not travel to the UK until your college’s suspension is resolved. This is on the advice of the UK Border Agency. You should change your ticket ASAP.

I doubt you will be able to get a refund from your college as most schools and colleges in the UK will only process a refund when they receive an original visa refusal document.

You should remain in your home country until your college’s suspension is resolved. Remember to contact your college to defer the start date of your course.

And by the way the visas were granted by UK border Agency after taking all the documents and the FEES. If they were not sure about there so called A Rated or B Rated colleges before, then I don’t think we need to be blamed for that!!!!

    • You may know of one or two examples where the student visa route has clearly been abused, but you can not tar all students with the same brush.

I think that nearly every person who has posted comments here is a legitimate student, who have legitimate concerns becuase their college’s sponsor licence has been suspended.

The UK Border Agency granted sponsor licences to colleges following the introduction of the Points Based System without ever visiting the schools or colleges. This is where all these problems have arisen.

I agree with you in that I have no sympathy for any bogus student caught up in all this mess. A crackdown of the education sector was well overdue and these changes will make things better in the long-run for international students.

You also say that most colleges are visa factories. The figure is more like sub 5%.

I don’t know the chances of it being re-included, but I will contact them for an official update and post anything I receive in reply.

In any case, the process to be re-approved by the UK Border Agency can be a long one – it could take several months.

Keep checking the Register of Sponsors which we publish daily on this site to see when your college is re-included.

    • 7200 Pounds were shown was for the living expenses in UK but my dear, if we had already paid 8500 Pounds before to take admissions and then after those colleges have been suspended where has that Fees gone, and taking admission in new college or uni is again making the payments and starting it from all over again. That’s the main problem. But I would again say All the students are not bogus and fake!!! Don’t forget the share of income in UK economy because of the Foreign Students and all this happened because of the fact that YOU allowed it to happen!! No body can cross borders till the Border Agencies allow them!!!!

    • Please dont jump up and down with no reason at all. No one is crying here for not being able to pay the fee. Its all about ‘What happens to all they have paid already!’. Secondly why should they pay again to home office FLR(S) fee when ‘Grade A’ college (Note: Awarded by authorised people) suddenly branded as ‘Black Listed!’

      • unfortunately KJ, I think having to pay for another visa application is just a fact of life. The liability doesn’t lie with the Government – it is the college that has broken the rules and students should therefore seek legal redress against their education provider to recoup such costs.

And all students should remember that there are some very reasonably priced insurance packages that will cover individuals against loss of tuition fees, so students should take time to educate themselves about the options available to them.

This is where there is a clear difference between agents who are in it to genuinely help students and those just in the game for the money.

    • Are you suggesting that students should use the money they have to support themselves to pay to enrol at a new college?

This money was never to be used to pay tuition fees, or for study as you put it, it is for maintenance; i.e. day to day living expenses.

        • Dear Emmanuel

Thanks for your question – we’ll be making a new post to update everyone on the Highly Trusted Sponsors list shortly. Allow me to give you a brief summary in the mean time.

The Highly Trusted Sponsor list will be a new Register, which all colleges providing courses with a work based element will have to be on. Education providers who receive public money will be automatically included on the new Register. All other education providers will have to apply for inclusion. I imagine that if the school has been recently inspected, then no further visit by the UKBA would be necessary. And vice versa, if the UKBA haven’t visited the school, I’m sure they’ll do so at this opportunity.

There will also be very strict criteria and rules for remaining a Highly Trusted Sponsor. For example, one rule currently being discussed is to remove any education provider who has either 1 % or 10 (whichever is less) no-shows per year.

We’ll get a more detailed post on this issue out soon. My email is: daniel@adviceforyou.org.uk

        • Watching, we’re happy for you to share your views, but don’t make your comments so personal. We will not tolerate abuse or attacks on our readers.

You’ve made some good points previously, don’t ruin it by dragging the debate to petty playground insults.

    • Watching,

Despite this comment being so unpopular, I do think there are some truths in it.

The problem of abuse of the Student General Visa route has been a long one, extending back to the Conservative Government of John Major. It is only now that a government has acted to tighten up the system.

And I have to agree with you, the way that the UK Border Agency went about their business is chaotic. However, they didn’t really have many options open to them when the Points Based System was introduced: they could hardly suspend applications to all colleges whilst they inspected them – that would be disastrous!

However, I do not take your point that all genuine students will have the funds to pay another 5,6, or 8 thousand GBP to enrol on a new course 3,6,9 months down the line. Sorry, but this is just illogical.
