Anglian College Responds to your Criticisms Following UKBA Suspension

As the Principal of Anglian College London I wish to respond to these criticisms.

At the end of 2009 we were investing heavily in a new building, with space and facilities (described by the BAC inspector as “very impressive”) to teach 2000 more students. So we asked the UKBA for more quota to visa-sponsor students … and were ignored … and ignored … then abruptly licence-suspended with no reason given. The UKBA’s “evidence” to justify that action later turned out to be stupidity on their part, as I hope to explain in another post.

Therefore the College had to suddenly bring the whole recruitment process to a screeching halt, and start to pay refunds to literally hundreds of disappointed students. It takes far more administrative effort than you might naively imagine to pay a refund. We have to make sure that the payment really has been received, and was not just a cheque that bounced. And that the student has not received a visa anyway. And that the payment goes back to exactly the place from which it came. (A tiny minority of fraudsters create a problem for the honest majority.) You would be amazed how many man-hours of our senior staff time has been spent queuing in bank branches.

Here in the College we tend to be proud of just how many refunds have gone out reasonably promptly and to the right places. However, if you are one of the victims of our mistakes (on top of the UKBA’s unjustified actions) you will of course be upset. One of my jobs as Principal is to stand up for the interests of our students, which includes sometimes nagging our administrative staff to sort out problems. It seems that Priyanka’s refund was authorised only on 25 February (once the right documents were provided) and was sent out before I write this on 22 March. The only explanation for this delay by us (of nearly 4 weeks not 4 months) is simple overwork among our accounts staff and I apologise sincerely.

Our facilities, even in the old building controlled by our landlord, are among the best in the further-education college business, and our teaching standards are better than most
universities. So please, no more scurrilous accusations.

  • PLEASE do not attend this college!!! As a former student I can tell you that this principal is LYING!!! He does not care at all about any of the students ..none of the staff at Anglian college care about the students all they care about is taking your money!!!

I and some of my classmates were abruptly suspended early this year for supposed “poor attendance” and refused re-admission to finish our course whilst some students who had equally poor attendance [] were allowed to stay on the course and gain their qualification.

[]There are some really terrible people operating at Anglian College and you know who you are!!

Furthermore, the standard of teaching is extremely poor and disorganised and once you start a course they will also spring unexpected “hidden charges” on you.

Honestly I am very shocked and disapointed at the UKBAs decision to lift the suspension and I think the principal should stop lying there was obviously a valid reason why you were suspended and neither you nor the college cares about any of the students you are just out to take their money!

International students, please invest wisely in other colleges that genuinely care about you!! Dont waste your money on this bogus college. I predict they will have more problems in the future!

  • its hard to believe that anglian college does not process refunds as they would not be giving updates here if they were not issuing the refund. i think they have already stated the reason for delay in refunds and therefore the delay should be a matter of time…. lets see

  • when will LONDON SAM provide such updates ??
will they ever refund the fees?
they were inspected on 19th feb and its already been a month since then…

    • I agree, I think it’s about time London SAM made another announcement. It’s been nearly two months since they made a public announcement and if they say that the UKBA has not been in touch, I’d be highly skeptical.

  • Hi,
It’s glad to read statement posted by Anglian College London. Unfortunitly, I have complain about my Cousin’s refund which has been pending since october 2009. I am really upset about College REFUND policy. No Colleges hold student’s fees ONLY ANGLIAN COLLEGE LONDON DOES and that is their beauty …

    • Hi Ananta

That’s an awful long time to have to wait for a refund. Have the college told you why it is taking so long? I find it hard to believe that administrative delays could leave a refund pending for over 5 months.

Could you provide your cousin’s details, such as his full name and student number, so that maybe we can get a response from Anglian directly here – after all, they have responded to one student by name in their post.

  • Dear Sir,

I suggest that when a college is suspended by the ukba the college should let the students know the reason why.
Would it not be fair to show the students the letter why you have been suspended, if it is due to a minor issue what is wrong with telling the students.
The home office may suspend you because they have uncovered a serious fraud or it may just be a problem with a specific course that needs addressing before you can be back on the register.
Students need to know the real reason and then they will not panic, they will suffer greatly if your colleges are bogus but if genuine their will not be much fuss as the students and staff all are aware of the minor issues and that the colleges are dealing with it within the 28 day time frame.
Most colleges will become suspended at one point and this is to be expected , the home office are being very thorough and anything even an out of date certificate on a wall will be a problem with them.
so my advise is to let the students see the letter and what is wrong and then they came make a decision on what they want to do.

    • Nice idea johnsmith.

But I think it could be counter productive in some situations. A large, busy college who has been suspended out of formality rather than suspicion, may well conclude that an announcement and subsequent PR hit is necessary. If they’re confident the problem would be resolved relatively quickly, many colleges have informed their business partners of the situation and deferred entry of any students who have come to them direct. Kept them on ice if you will. I do think in business that it is not always necessary to inform everyone about everything.

That said, we must address the colleges who’s licences have been suspended for considerable time. In this situation, it is surely of positive value for an institution to talk to the public. Given we live in a connected world now, it is even more important. Companies like TalkTalk are a great example, as they resolve customer service issues publicly in their Twitter stream. Schools and colleges should take notice and grasp the opportunity to repair the damage to their brands that is inevitable following a long period of silence on the matter.

Given a lack of business people at the heart of these so-called business, I doubt anything of the sort is likely to happen!
