High Profile Clampdown on Sham Weddings and Bogus Colleges, plus Radical Changes to the UKBA

Damien Green, the UK Immigration minister has drawn the battle lines against those who think the UK is soft touch. He said the Government was determined to send a clear message to those with no right to come to the UK.

The immigration minister is facing heavy criticism over his policy to return Iraqi nationals on charter flights and for paying asylum seekers in Calais waiting to enter the UK illegally £4,000 not to do so.

Threat from bogus Students low despite what the Headlines Suggest

Recent research by a well respect company – Ernst & Young – shows that fears of bogus students – often caused by outrageous headlines – are unfounded and the risk of fraudulent international students is in fact low.

In major student destinations across the world, headlines whip up frenzy about the threat we face from bogus and fraudulent international students. The US, UK and Australia are popular study destinations and it is no surprise that the media has caused blind fear amongst their populations, with over 3 million students arriving in these countries each year.

Parliamentary Question – Entry Clearances for Overseas Students

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how many entry visas for students attending colleges which were subsequently closed on the intervention of the UK Border Agency were issued in (a) 2007 and (b) 2008; and how many such visas were issued between 1 January and 31 October 2009. (301232)

Phil Woolas: Since the introduction of PBS Tier 4 on 31 March 2009, UKBA has the authority to suspend or revoke the licence of a college. Of the 1,800 colleges currently licensed, 14 had their licences revoked between 1 April and 31 October this year. The number of visas issued to students attending these colleges in 2007, 2008 and 2009 is shown in the following table:

Bogus Colleges Exposed: Gang Jailed

Bogus Colleges Gang ArrestedA gang of four people who were caught running bogus colleges and immigration service firms were jailed for 25 years. The bogus colleges scam was reported to have earned the criminal gang millions of pounds, the UK Border Agency (UKBA) reported.

The members of the bogus college scam were all arrested after a thorough investigation by both the UKBA’s Immigration Crime Team and the Met Police. The four-man criminal gang – 2 Chinese nationals and 2 Bangladeshi nationals – responded differently to the charges. Three of the men pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 7 years in prison. The last man pleaded not guilty, but was found guilty following his trial at Croydon Crown Court. He was sentenced to only 4 years in prison.

Chip Shop Colleges are Ruining Britain’s Reputation

UK Scam Colleges a Serious ProblemTens of thousands of bogus students are in Britain because of the “national scandal” of sham colleges that offer courses to foreigners, accoutring to The Times newspaper.

Hundreds of bogus colleges have enrolled young people who in reality are economic migrants using the student visa route to enter the UK.
