We thought that study groups in online virtual worlds and conversation lessons using voice over IP phones were leading pushing the boundaries of education and technology. However, a new use for an old piece of equipment has been found. What if you don’t have access to a high speed Internet connection, or you prefer to do things away from your computer? What if you live in a country that is absolutely karaoke mad? Well, you’d get your students to learn by singing difficult lessons of course!
A nursing college in the south of Thailand has done just that to help students and keep their attention when teaching difficult subjects. Students have taken to this with joy and enthusiasm often never seen by students. As one nursing student said, “The songs our lecturers composed help a lot with our understanding and memorization. The gist of the lesson is already in them.”
Anyone who has ever studied with people from the Far East will know that there are several students who are great at sleeping through lessons. Not a chance in these lessons. Gone are the days of falling asleep during boring lectures, stuck in hot stuffy rooms. Students are so happy that these methods have begun to replace the old style lectures and hope they don’t disappear. “I do hope we’ll continue to have this kind of learning material around – lectures are just so boring”, Saralee Bumruang, a nursing student commented.
Now, enough of the laughing there is some planning and through to this madness. Apart from the challenging task of finding the right song the song’s content really is the key to success. For example, Kantaporn Yodchai, the programme’s developer, tells us that if students are studying about heart disease, the song will start with the causes of the illness and proceed to tell the story of how to care for a patient such a condition.
This programme has been a hit! Not just with the Thai university – 5 full karaoke lessons have been developed – but the world over. 200 copies of these karaoke lessons have, apparently, been used in classrooms worldwide.
I registered as a nonoh user just yesterday and successfully phoned to India. But today when I wanted to make the same it states call disconnected due to unknown error..can you tell me the reason..it repeats the story of voip for me…do u have any other alternative to use nonoh…
