Students often worry that their accents is wrong or that perhaps they’ll say the wrong thing and look stupid. If you keep thinking like this you’ll never speak at all! You already know that the best and fastest way to learn anything is to practice often so like anything else, practice makes perfect. There is no need to be nervous when you are using English, wherever you may be. In fact, many people will really appreciate that you are speaking English.
Make Use of Everything
We can’t stop going on about this, but it’s so, so important. You’re learning doesn’t stop when you leave the class. There are so many opportunities for you to continue practicing and developing your language skills. If you really want to do well, you should practice your English as much as possible. This will help you to learn faster and progress quicker on your course. As you’ll be surrounded by English if you are studying in the UK, there are so many fun and interesting ways that you can practice your English.
Immerse Yourself
You’ve come all this way to experience life in the UK so go out there and totally immerse yourself in our fabulous culture. Have breakfast in a greasy spoon, ride on an open top tour bus, go to the theatre and have drinks in the local pub afterwards. London is such a vibrant city that there really is something for everyone to do and you’ll be able to have a great social life; you won’t even notice that you’re working hard and practicing your English! Make an effort to listen to the English radio in the morning everyday, catch the news and go to the cinema every week – no you’ve got a fantastic excuse to go all the time! The most important thing to do is always, always speak English with your friends, especially if they speak the same language as you. You are here to learn English – so speak English. And only English!
Practice Specifics
If you want to do the best you can, then you’re going to have to study. There is a saying that “A-grade students never miss a class” and that’s the kind of attitude that really will set you up to ace your grades. You should study harder areas such as grammar and aim to learn as many new words as possible. This should be routine ladies and gentleman. Yes, it maybe boring, but master grammar and vocabulary and all your other language skills will rapidly develop.
Similarly, if you are studying English for a qualification, such as the IELTS examination, you should make sure that you practice that test specifically. Do past papers. Get used to the exam, the style and the types of questions. You may be studying a foreign language, but there are still common exam techniques which can see you through. As you would for any other exam, spend time doing past papers to be really comfortable with the exam.

And perhaps cheesy – although you should have picked up on this throughout the article- make sure that you have fun! If you’re having fun, you’ll learn so much more. And there really is something for everyone to do social wise. So make sure that you make the most of your time whilst studying in the UK.
