Experience is everything, as they say, so we’d like to share ours with you! We’ve spoken with many international students to get there feedback on a wide range of issues. Today we’d like to bring to you the most popular tips from students themselves about what to bring when you come to the UK as an international student. In particular, what cool student gadgets and technology you should consider essential as an international student. There are many student horror stories of problems that you can experience when studying in the UK. One student whose laptop broke made a call to Dell to sort it out – but of course, he didn’t speak enough English to make arrangements! Follow our great student gadgets guide and avoid any unnecessary problems when studying in the UK.
Laptop: Make sure you take out a global warranty – it really is worth the little extra you may have to pay, trust me! This way you won’t have to take your laptop back home to get it fixed. You’ll be able to get information of all the repair centres easily online.
Laptop Lock: This really is a must and as the old saying goes, you never can be too careful. Your laptop could easily disappear in any manner of ways and by using a lock not only will you be more likely to keep your laptop, but there will also be a visual deterrent to any thief too. This will reduce the likelihood of anyone thinking about taking your laptop.
Printer: Don’t pack it and bring it with you! Save the space in your luggage. You might be surprised, but we’ve spoken to loads of students who’ve brought printers with them. The best option is to buy one when you get to the UK and prices are very good on printers these days.
Mobile Phone: Mobiles in Britain are unfortunately locked to a particular network. This can be particularly annoying as you will have to pay around £30 to unlock your phone. As part of the Advice For You free welcome pack, we’ll give you a free mobile phone so you needn’t worry about this problem. Be using a Pay as You Go SIM card whilst in the UK you’ll get much better call rates than using your own phone and you won’t be tied into any contract.
Travel Adaptor: Believe it or not, the humble travel adaptor is a key gadget for students: all the previous student gadgets will cease to function without this item! As your probably going to be using this with your electronic items, you should consider buying a travel adaptor with surge protection. Not that there are many dodgy plug sockets in the UK, but power surges have been known, so why not protect your student electronics?
USB Drive: The USB drive is our number one piece of student technology. You can take it everywhere you go and have with you all your important files. University campuses in the UK are often spread all over the cities they are in, so you don’t want to find you’ve forgotten an electronic copy of your essay on the way to handing it in! Believe me, this is a real nightmare – I have in fact made this mistake myself and felt so utterly stupid afterwards. Naturally, I scored 0 for the assignment and kissed goodbye to 20% of my grade. Be warned and learn from my mistake!
Movies: You must have heard many jokes about the UK’s weather. Whilst it isn’t that bad, it will certainly take some time getting used to. Bring a selection of movies to watch. You should make sure that you watch these in English with subtitles in your own language whilst you study – this will help you so much whilst studying English in England for example.
Excellent post. As always I enjoy reading your posts…

Thanks for publishing about this. There’s a lot of solid tech information on the internet. You’ve got a lot of that info here on your site. I’m impressed – I try to keep a couple blogs reasonably live, but it’s a struggle sometimes. You’ve done a great job with this one. How do you do it?
