Comment posted Students Cheating at the IELTS Test by Bruce.
There is NO doubt that cheating does take place.
I have students who purport to have IELTS 5.5. and a high TOELF score.
They cannot understand, speak or write English.
Forged certificates, bribed examiners or incomptent marking must be somewhere in the picture.
Happily the UKBA is at last addressing this issue – they will be introducing a SECURE TEST this summer and HOPEFULLY it will be at an IELTS 6 standard for ALL student admissions.

WELL DONE!!! At long, long, long last! The UK is NOT the world’s nanny – but a place for genuine asylum seekers, sincere students and real immigrants! All of whom must respect our way of life, and allow us to carry on with our traditions and culture without fear of being taken to court for upholding our values and beliefs. Uur traditions and culture and those who enter our borders must not try to impose their traditions on us – including Shariah law! We will respect what is yours, so do not demand that we overturn our centuries of life and respect us!
- Threat from bogus Students low despite what the Headlines Suggest
Thank you Daniel – I agree, there needs to be caution about believing everything we read – from whatever source! The research mentioned has not touched those at grassroots level. The report is not accurate insofar the realities on the ground.
Do you know who commissioned the report and why?
- Threat from bogus Students low despite what the Headlines Suggest
It seems that Ernst and Young have access to material that is not accessible to some of us here in the UK.
Their criticism of the headlines is strange! I, for one, would not give them any business if that is how they give information!
Many of us on the ground KNOW how many bogus students still slip through the net – and we meet them EVERYDAY.
In ths instance the HEADLINES in newspapers are accurate and the facts behind their headlines verifiable. - London College of Business and Management Have Disappeared!
Hi ShergillI suggest the following:
1. Your hire a solicitor and give him / her all the facts
2. Ask your solicitor to write to the BAC / ASIC – and lodge a complaint and enquire how they passed acceptance in the first place? Ask you solicitor whether you have a case against them also for giving confidence about a college that was fraudulent – their inspection process and so on.
3. Send copies of all correspondence per your solicitor to all the colleges listed on the UKBA accredited site and ask for their support in taking action against the scum bags who lie and cheat to steal from students.
4. Attempt to find out who the agents are who represent the scam colleges and see if legal action can be taken against them – or can they be blacklisted as unreliable by the UKBA.Unfortunately, another college that used to operate in Borough High Street (London Bridge) has had its name changed as is reportedly under new management. The previous directors have left (we think).
One of them has started a college in Oxford Street and the other is starting a college just our of London. Both these directors have been reported to the police and the Revenue Department. Further action is being prepared as I write. We do need to get everyone together to present a united front – perhaps Daniel can assist us?
Regards
Bruce
They should not let students carry any electronic gear except a simple calculator in any exam. Problem solved.

The answer, I’m sure, is biometrics for the tests too. However, that raises the obvious questions of cost, responsibility with personal data and privacy.
Thinking more about it, I wonder what systems will be put in place by the UK Border Agency for their testing system that will make it so much better? It is so hard to verify identity reliably if someone is 5,000 miles away.
However, what the industry is now seeing are stricter operating guidelines from education providers for their agents. Face-to-face interviews, at an agent’s premises, as well as Skype video interviews with the sponsor to check identity and English level, are the standard.

Hi everybody,
I hate the exams. I tried to take toefl, unfortunately i could not get enough score. Though I went to the states. I talked a lot of teacher from several universities, when i arrived there. I explained my background and purpose in English despite it’s bad. Some of them invited me to talked. And one of them decided to try me and we started to work in his lab. at his university. After awhile, he said to me that he will accept me to his department as research assistant with full scholarship as long as i satisfy the school’s language requirement that is min 80 if toefl ibt. unfortunately i could not succeed. During that time, i worked his lab for abbot 1 year, i used to attend meeting every week to discuss progresses of tasks, and i published one academic paper which has my name on it as well in a int’ conference. Finally, i could not resist that situation. i had to leave and leaved.
There is some problem about English exams for me. the rules are okay but they should not be everything. There should be different measurements to gain acceptance. Or cheating should be ignorable. After so many trouble every way could be seem as a way which will rescue us from this trouble.
I know some peoples who has high score from the exams, but are not able to talk or understand things are spoken. It’s very big handicap for me. Also some people just study repetitively questions of the exams, they memorize almost all questions. When they get the exams, they see almost same questions or same template of questions for writing.
it’s my point of view.
i hate the exams…
